How to Install

Note:
If you don’t find the installer package icon, please extract the downloaded file “xxxxxxxx.dmg” manually with the Macintosh “Disk Utility”. The “Disk Utility ” can be found in /Applications/Utilities. Using the “Disk Utility”, the Installer Disk Image can be mounted.

  • Double click the installer package icon “xxxxxxxx.pkg”. Follow the instructions on the screen.

For USB Users:

  1. Connect the USB cable into your machine and your Macintosh. Ensure that the machine is powered on.
    Note:
    Do not connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub.
  2. The printer driver will be installed automatically.
  3. You need to make sure if the installation of the printer driver is complete.
  4. Select “System Preferences” from the Apple Menu.
  5. Click the “Printers & Scanners (Print & Scan)” icon.

Case 1: CUPS Driver (Recommended)

  1. Check if your Brother machine is displayed in the “Printers” section.
  2. If your Brother machine is displayed, the setup is now complete.
    If your Brother machine is not displayed, try to disconnect and connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh again. And then repeat the steps 4 – 6 to check if the installation of the printer driver is complete.

Case 2: BR-Script Driver

  1. Click the “+” button which is located below the “Printers” section.
  2. Click the “Default” icon which is located at the top of the dialog box.
  3. Select your machine from the “Name (Printer Name)” list.
  4. Make sure that “XXXXXXX + PS” or “XXXXXXX + BR-Script3” is selected in the “Use (Print Using)” list. (Where XXXXXXX is your model name.)
  5. Click “Add”. The printer is now available in the “Printers & Scanners (Print & Scan)” list.
  6. Select “Quit System Preferences” from the Apple Menu. The setup is now complete.

For Network Users (if applicable):

  1. Connect your Brother machine and your Macintosh to the network.
    If you have not connected the machine to your network, click here to see how to configure the Brother machine for a network.
  2. Select “System Preferences” from the Apple Menu.
  3. Click the “Printers & Scanners (Print & Scan)” icon.
  4. Click the “+” button which is located below the “Printers” section.

  2. Select “LPD (Line Printer Daemon)” from the “Protocol” list.
  3. Enter the TCP/IP Address or DNS Name of the printer into the “Address” box.
  4. When specifying the “Queue Name”, use the value “BRNxxxxxxxxxxxx_P1_AT” where xxxxxxxxxxxx is the last 12 digits of the Ethernet address.
  5. Select “Select a driver to use…” from the “Use (Print Using)” list and choose “XXXXXXX + PS” or “XXXXXXX + BR-Script3” from the list. (Where XXXXXXX is your model name.)
  6. Click “Add”. The printer is now available in the “Printers & Scanners (Print & Scan)” list.
  7. Select “Quit System Preferences” from the Apple Menu. The setup is now complete.

How to Install

Step1. Download the tool.(linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz)

The tool will be downloaded into the default “Download” directory.
(The directory location varies depending on your Linux distribution.)
e.g. /home/(LoginName)/Download

Step2. Open a terminal window.

Step3. Go to the directory you downloaded the file to in the last step. By using the cd command.

e.g. cd Downloads

Step4. Enter this command to extract the downloaded file:

Command: gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz

e.g. gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1.gz

Step5. Get superuser authorization with the “su” command or “sudo su” command.

Step6. Run the tool:

Command: bash linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-* Brother machine name 
e.g. bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1 HL-3170CDW

Step7. The driver installation will start. Follow the installation screen directions.
When you see the message “Will you specify the DeviceURI ?”,

For USB Users: Choose N(No)
For Network Users: Choose Y(Yes) and DeviceURI number.

The install process may take some time. Please wait until it is complete.

(for USB Connection)

  1. Open a web browser and go to “http://localhost:631/printers”.
  2. Check if the Device URI of your printer is “usb://Brother/(your printer’s model name)”If the device URI is different from the example above, please go to “Modify Printer” of your printer to select proper device and driver.
    If your printer is not listed on “http://localhost:631/printers”, please go to “http://localhost:631/admin” and click “Add printer” and select proper device and driver.

(for Network Connection)

  1. Open a web browser and go to “http://localhost:631/printers”.
  2. Click “Modify Printer” and set following parameters.
    – “LPD/LPR Host or Printer” or “AppSocket/HP JetDirect”      for Device
    – lpd://(Your printer’s IP address)/binary_p1      for Device URI
    – Brother      for Make/Manufacturer Selection
    – Your printer’s name      for Model/Driver Selection
  • Try a test print
    Open a text editor, write something and select “print” from the menu.
